Markus Sandlund was born 1975 in Norrfjärden in the north of Sweden. He started playing the cello when he was 6 years old and studied at the Royal University of Music in Stockholm. He worked with several orchestras in Sweden and played on many studio recordings.
He was a member of The Tanarco piano trio that often worked with Swedish composers. He also played with legendary Ray Charles when he toured Sweden.

After the SMiLE tour in Australia & New Zealand in December Markus travelled to Khao Lak in Thailand. He met his girlfriend Sofia and was vacationing when the Tsunami hit on the morning of December 26.
